Hit Home + ...After the Fact

6. Someday Find the Words
7. Unsunset
8. Lackluster
9. Vernate
10. To Heart

So I've been praying for a Hit Home full length since I first hit play on Happily Ever... This band is just beyond good. The songwriting ability of these guys is ridiculous. How can an album be so dramatically sad sounding yet so beautiful and inspiring and poetic at the same time? Guitars dance over struggling vocals, dizziness inducing drum patterns, and some of the best bass lines out there. This band just frustrates me beyond belief because they're just so good. If I could name two bands that have made me who I am today, they would be Roof Doctor and this fucking band.
Also I'll add that it was super freaking cool to hear a new slightly different rendition of "Unsunset" which is from their split with Buttons and Mindy. (Those strumming patterns at 3:05 just make me shiver and smile)
Check this god damn band out for the love of the god damn band.

Favorite track: I for once can't say I have a favorite track

One time I was scheduled to play a show with Hit home in Saint louis and for about a month I was beyond freaked out at the thought that I'd get to play with my favorite band. But sadly they had to drop because of some issue.

Tender chord progressions and amazing melodies make up this beautiful release by this PA. band.
(PA has so many good bands it's dumb). The 8 songs are reminiscent of that slow beautiful twinkly emo that everyone can get behind. Not a single song here is bad, so download it and start jamming, the perfect kind of songs to throw onto a mixtape for that special someone who won't care about you come next June.

Far Away Cranes
Steinborgium
I'd Rather be Driving; Skyscrapers
And Was it Worth it in the end?

Hey guys it's been a while seems like just yesterday it was winter and I paid more attention to music in the scene so lets try our hand at this here we go:

2012 release from the math rock band Invalids is chock full of guitar tapping, time signature changes, and other cool things that will make fans of the genre ooze with ridiculous tunings. Production is hella tight and song length is long enough to make this release the time length of about 420 emo releases or 666 youth crew 2011 demos. Here is a playbook replay of each and every single song without me leaving out any of them:

Sherman is connector:

x(9x+/- (-)3^4) / 5x

You've got all of the dum dum dum dum dum dum doo doo's that you could ever want, with the guitars sounding like slappy basses and the basses sounding like another guitar probably idk.

KISSED HER IN HTE CARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR

It's a pipe bomb jobriath:

2+2=5

O K so take a slow song that is on the radio nowadays and then throw it away and then you've got this song and you're happy about it because it's cool and look there is some twinkly parts and did he just say faculties who knows and who cares listen to that snare work.

And that's all of the songs no questions asked or else.

Favorite Songs: Sherman Is Connector but Diastole is real good too so just listen to this ok

7. horses never bet on people and neither do I

Texas band (Texas is monopolizing on bands i think) Moonassi is a screamo/twinkle/emo band. I got the chance to play a house show with these guys a while back, and they were amazing, so I had to check out their recordings.

The seven track release, Fact, Fiction, and Everything In Between, is quick and to the point, production is well done for screamo/skramz music, and each song is short, making this a release you can listen to multiple times. Overall feeling is like most screamo bands, helpless, and vocals screech over heavy bass lines and what are simple twinkle guitar lines. As far as drumming goes, you've got some normal emo drumming, with chaotic blast beats thrown into the mix, to give the songs a great emo-violence feel. The release reminds me of Pg. 99, The Saddest Landscape, and Malon. Check it out, it's on their bandcamp as a pay as you will, and Moonassi is a relatively new band, so be on the lookout for new stuff in the near future.

Bone Bats---Entry-Level

Bone Bats////Entry-Level
this is my pet Jimmy, he's cute.

SMASH HITS:

1) Quarantine the Pabst
2) Cash Bone
3) Ghost Channel
4) Fake Science Monthly
5) Never-ending Sass Equation
6) Weed Jeans (Jazz Cords)
8) Baby, You Can Extend My Metaphor
9) Jesus Could've Gotten Into Any Frat He Wanted To.
10) Selfie Destruct

#spookymonth anthem right here, skele-ladies and skele-men.

Entry-level was recorded in some west philly basement that was probably lit up by black-wax candles and and bone-torches. Recorded with only the best microphones available from the grave. Melodies are loose and enjoyable, just like the joints in between your bones. Faint traces of influences include bands like, Dinosaur Jr., Smashing Pumpkins, Joyce Manor, and Bats. Bats are probably the pre-bonement version of Bone Bats where they finally realized they can have some fun in their little bat caskets.

This is you and two of your pals while you guys jam out to Entry-Level. You're all dancing. You're all dead. You've all decomposed down to the bone, but you're all dancing. (Them hips, though.)

WOAH DUDE, watch out for those sp00ky grooves, bud. This album brings us a great deal of ideas and textures from the grave that'll help make your bones rattle. Bone-Jams like Ghost Channel or Weed Jean (jazz cords) will spook ya. Ghosts everywhere. They'll possess you, and rock out to this jam, so if you notice any involuntary movement then you know why. These guys have serious songwriting creativity throughout the entire album, it effortlessly flows in-n-out of different styles to make the songs eccentric and interesting. I wonder how many bones they had to read to come up with these ideas. I super excited for whatever else they decide to conjure up in their spare time. Until then, rest in peace.

6. My Life Is A Steinbeck Novel

Super duper emo band Secret Stuff''s super duper emo release, Learning Not To Care, is a super duper six song emo release. Filled with long song titles, twinkly guitar parts, sad lyrics, and at least one audio clip, with this you've got your normal everyday stock twinkle stuff, but with higher production quality.
Not that being a generic emo band(emo/twinkle((Emo/indie pop))) is a bad thing however. Every band ever has something they can bring to the table. And besides this is a really nice release. Catchy riffs and choruses and super sad stuff makes me keep on coming back to listen to it. Runs times are shorter than your average song, (Or you can look at them as average to the normal 'underground-band' esq song).
Overall with everything about it being put into account, it's a release you should check out. If you aren't really into emo music because you haven't been exposed to it, this is a great release to start with. If you do like emo music, hey, here's another one. If you hate emo music for no logical reason that you can back up: That's your choice but just so you know you're a dumb.

But I don't hate you,
I just really wish I did
I would have married you,
Who am I kidding? We're just kids

MATH Florida Math Rock band, Van Gogh Sky's 5 song release, Have/Had, is one that's just full of math stuff so if you like MATH(math pop twinkle) then this is the release for you. This band also shares a member with one of my favorite twinkle/math bands, Hit Home (lol check out the horrible review I did back when I started this blog).

A brief history of math music:
Humans>Noise>Early tribal songs>Instruments>Million Years>Chuck Berry>Rock>Progressive Rock>Rush makes the song "YYZ">Probably some nerds>Telecasters>Twinkle>Piglet

Vocals are a mixture of strained tenor singing and relaxed talk/singing/noise making. Guitars are all sorts of mathy and twinkly and I bet one of them is either a telecaster or one of the guys here wishes he had a telecaster or maybe I'm wrong(probably). Bass moves around and does it's own thing, sticking with the song of course, but doing better than most band's bassists do. But I mean it would be kind of hard to follow the root notes being played by the guitar when the guitars aren't strumming anything. Drums are cool and I bet the drummer crosses his arms a lot and probably gets tons of babes(Ladies). Or maybe dudes(Male gender people). Idk the world's a wonderful place full of sex and everyone's sexing everyone.

Anyway in all honesty this isn't even that mathy of a release, it's got math aspects but it's more twinkle/alternative emo rock some obscure genre that I could figure out but lets just call it More mathy than normal twinkle music. Genre's are imp0rtant guise

2. Come Back With All of Your Faculties
3. Dooty Pooty
4. "I'm All out of HP"
5. Please return my Daniel Johnston Record
6. AGAPE? Fuck that, PHILOS

Is it just me, ruining everything?

Kansas city band Lion House is a twinkle/screamo band off of Work Ethic Records. Six songs, all on the longer side of run times, each with it's own special sound. I guess you could classify Lion House as a skramz/screamo band, but that's up to your own discretion. The songs rise and fall, soaring with beautiful dynamic changes over the kind, relaxing twinkle guitars. Vocals are interchanged between remnants of Title Fight, and the sound of the singing vocals in Malon. For Lion House, every instrument is important in the mix, Bass lines carrying the song as the guitars dance around, and the complicated drum patterns filling the mix. Usually what I see off of Work Ethic are bands that are more towards the hardcore spectrum of music, but I 100% see why Lion House is on WER. They're really good. The entire release is really relaxing, but even through that, they keep the songs intense and strong, pushing forward so that there isn't a moment that seems repeated or dull. Each song carries it's own strength and brings it's own aspect to the release, so I can't exactly say I enjoy any one song more than the other. This is the kind of release where you need to just put it on and listen to it all the way through. I'd love to see these guys live. If you like good music or music in general check em' out. Free to download, free to enjoy.

Lavender Town by Free Throw

Lavender Town| Free Throw
1. Slam With The Best Or Jam Like The Rest
2. Now Kith
3. Lavender Town
4. Pennsylvania Dutch

What do you get if you combine Twinkle and Pop-y punk-y stuff? I dunno probably shit but in other news Lavender Town by Free Throw combines twinkle guitar with emo vocals and almost a pop punk catchiness to it. The four song release has audio clips thrown in between the songs, developing the story of what the band is trying to get along. I'm pretty sure these guys weren't trying to be too serious with the audio but they are still a little serious so i dunno. I thought it was cool. Anyway, between the pokemon reference in the name, and the super catchy songs and great production, I'd say this release is hella nice. FFO: Crying at night, being sad, post-breakup sadness, cute mainstream emo bands, twinkle guitar, really cool drums.
I don't rank things because I think that takes away from the review but since this review is one of the shittiest I've done, I'll rank this with a 13700 on a scale of 1-14501, with 1 being horrible, and 14501 being the equivalent of a 5 on a more reasonable scale.

Marietta//modern baseball split

Marietta//\\Modern Baseball | Couple's Therapy Split

1. Yeah Yeah Utah
2. Green Call Her Sims
3. Hope
4. It's cold out here.

Back from 2012, the Couple's Therapy Split features emo/twinkle bands Marietta and Modern Baseball. If you haven't listened to either of these bands before now, this would be a great place to get a sampler of the two bands, as the songs on this split are just as good as any other of the band's songs. Marietta shows a more emo/twinkle aspect to the split, while Modern Baseball delivers just the right amount of indie feel. I personally feel that Modern Baseball dominate's this split, hands down, but i'm a fan of the band so my opinion is a little biased.
Marietta side:
Very much noodleing, and the songs have a slightly more hollow feel to them. Reminds me more of the straight American Football kind of twinkle (surprise surprise)
Modern Baseball side:
Sing along-able. Reminds me of some of the other bands like Hit Home, and Dads
All in all, this split is one that you should check out if you've not listened to either of these bands before, and are a fan of the genre. If you aren't a fan of the genre, check out the Modern Baseball  side of the split. It's a little toned down.

Witches Take Them In by Quarrels

Witches Take Them In | Quarrels
1. Cupped Hands
2. Morning Sickness
3. Best Intentions
4. Scenes from a Jagged Sea
5. Bella Strega

You say your cursed but I went back to where you were born
The seasons there are changeless and the men live on the shores
You’ll find another man to fill you up to the brim
And I’ll drink water from cupped hands and start living, silent

Hey, cool band from Boston, Quarrels plays an indie pop/ indie rock/ emo influenced style of music. I've listened to this release almost non-stop these past few days. Run times of the songs land on a longer length, which can be both a good thing and a bad thing. In this case it's good. Production is done really well, and vocals(all clean) are amazing. This guy really knows how to sing.
A few things
The first song, "Cupped hands" is by far the best song on the release. the influence of twinkle/emo music is obvious. The song levels out at the end acoustically, and runs into the second song, "Morning sickness" perfectly. The band is really good at songwriting, and these songs won't bore you at all.  Instrumentally, I'm getting a Vessel vibe in all the songs. Guitar tone is light in most parts, nothing too heavy but not exactly twinkle light. The bass lines in this band though. Mostly great bass lines throughout. Not too high in the mix but still heard. In all of these songs, the lyrics are really well done. Nothing too cheesy, nothing too straight forward. Just the right amount of poetic.

"I've got a master plan.
I've got the best intentions"

Another cool thing is that everything about this release is really catchy, it'll stay stuck in your head for a while. Boston just seems to have an awesome music scene. I don't really know exactly how to describe this album, it's a hard one for me, so you'll just have to check it out yourself. So yeah, think of like a Basement-esq band but with a bit of a more popish feel. Check this release out, it's really good and one that you don't want to miss.

2. Tai Chi Chai Tea
3. Orange Mocha Frappuccino!
4. I don't know the first thing about Kiefer Sutherland
5. The Haitian Sensation

You still taunt me with your green eyes
Where do I belong?
Before I review this: I think I've listened to this release so much and I think I enjoy it so much that whatever review I'll give it will be 100000% biased and just me complimenting every aspect of it.

Anyway

Math Rock/Art Pop band Buttons and Mindy show a catchy art pop side to the emotional genre that is twinkle/math rock. Production is really really good, and from the first track, the band had my attention. This is the band I'd show people that I want to get into the twinkle/Math genre, but who aren't accustomed to the style.
Lyrical wise, these songs are as catchy as the swine flu if you've got a bad immune system. I've listened to "Orange Mocha Frappuccino!" about a million times, and know mostly all the lyrics to this release by heart. Vocal wise, this guy knows how to sing. 99% clean vocals, there are some yells in this weird inhaling voice during one of the songs, but it's far back in the mix and is really just there to add the aesthetics or whatever.
"I like the vocals because they are catchy and sound good"
Guitar playing is amazing, obviously because it's twinkle music. If the guitar player wasn't skilled then this
wouldn't be a math band. But what makes it even more cool is that the guitar player isn't only the main vocalist, but he is also the only guitar player. I'm a sucker for two and three piece bands because you've gotta be really creative to not make your songs boring and this band does a great job with the whole creativity aspect. "I like the guitar because I play guitar and it's cool"
Bass wise, I really love to listen to these bass lines. Not much I can say about them except they are really cool and stand out in the mix, which would be a problem, again, if the bassist was just some shmuck that played roots and clipped every time he touched a string. "I like the bass because it's not boring and sounds good"
Drums compliment the tracks perfectly and don't over power anything. Sorry drummer guy, I'd talk about your awesome drums more but the only drum beats I can play are four-in-the-floors and blast beats. "I like the drums because I can't drum like this guy drums"
Finally, in all of the bands I play in, we like to string our songs together with our live set, kind of run them together, and it's something that I always love when bands do, so I'll just throw out that the small fact that Buttons and Mindy do that on this release is totally cool to me.
Anyway, another horribly worded review. Check out the release.

9. It's hard to stay standing when all you've got to hold you is yourself.
10. Interlude II
11. Don't let me drown in a pool of my own blood

Saint Louis act Woodgraves's latest is a fully acoustic emo/twinkle release that shows off the solo act's ability at songwriting. Single guitar and vocals, these releases can usually either be really interesting, or really boring to listen to. On one side of the spectrum you've got your June and on the other hand you've got your releases by people who know how to play four chords and play 5 minute long songs. One thing I like about Woodgraves is that he keeps the songs emo style short. Averaging out at about 2 and a half minutes. So at least he's conscientious about these things. Recording is fine, lo-fi to say the least, was most likely done through a condenser mic. The thing that I go for on these kind of releases isn't vocals, or lyrics, which most people would want to take into consideration, but I go for the songwriting on the only instrument that is being played. If what's being played in the background isn't interesting, then I'm just listening to chord progressions for 13 or so minutes. If someone who went of vocals judged this based off of Ryan's singing ability, which reminds me of some emo band vocalist who ripped out his vocal chords screaming, then they would probably say this was horrible. I on the other hand, think that his vocals compliment the style of music/and the overall tone, perfectly.
A notable song for guitar on this release would be during "It's Hard To Stay Standing When All You've Got To Hold You is Yourself". It's got this twinkly vibe thingy going on that made me listen to it more than any of the other tracks on the release.
Overall, it's a cool release, so check it out.

2. Shimmer
3. Utterances

5. Harahan
6. Circles

10. Breathe On

Okkoto is a local 417 Math Rock/ "Psychedelic Shoegaze Hardcore" band that's been around for longer than most people around here have been in the Springfield Scene. They're a different kind of band that I've ever seen, but one that I really like. They actually played before one of my bands before and I was blown out of the water. Sleep/Talk has been around for a while, but they just recently released it hard-copies so people are taking another look at it.
This is a long release, almost 3 times longer than most of the releases I review, but the length of the listen is definitely worth it.
Anyway, Some of the Math riffs, as seen in "Shimmer" and throughout make my head spin. This band only has one guitar player, and he is just amazing at what he does. Bass as well. People don't give bassist's much of a rep but I mean have you tried being the bassist of a mathcore band because that shit's probably hard. Drums are heavy hitting when they need to be, and otherwise their slight accents highly compliment the track, and help get across what they are trying to do. The entire release is supposed to be like a journey through the mind, and trust me, some of the things they do may put you in some kind of a trance. Do not listen to while driving. Vocals are fun. The screams are mid-ranged to high, frankly chaotic, and the cleans are raspy and melodic. This band is really good at contrasts, and with songs that are clocking in at 10 minutes, they do some awesome contrasting things. I'm not usually a big fan of longer tracks, they tend to drone on and leave me bored, but this release is different. The tracks do drone on, but that's exactly the point. All of the songs do kind of meld together, (also probably the point) so if I ever see something that really strikes me as amazing, I have trouble finding which song it was in. This isn't the kind of release you can listen to in segments, or just skip to one song. To get the full experience, you'll need to listen to the entire thing through. Great release, get it.

Giraffidae by Blue Bird

Blue bird | Giraffidae
1. Do Nothing
2. 47516
3. Joseph Candeloro
4. Giraffidae

Nottingham UK band, Blue Bird, brings four emo/twinkle song with the release Giraffidae. From the first track of this release you see the twinkle influence of this band. Songs jump around between soft and chill undertones to harsh chaotic feels. Vocals are laid back and raspy, guitars are high tone(as with all releases of this genre). Drums are nice to listen to, I love listening to drums from this genre, or any of the instrumentation for that matter, because to play twinkle music you've got to be skilled. You don't see any (good) twinkle bands filled with kids playing simple C-Am,Em,G chord progressions, four-in-the-floor drum beats, 3-0-2-3 bass lines at 4/4. Bass is actually heard fairly well in this release. Mostly what I've taken about bass guitar from all the bands I listen to, and from playing bass in a hardcore band, is that even if the bass isn't heard over everything else, it's still heard, and helps fill the void of music, such as a bass drum fills the voids in drumming. Production quality is well done with this release, I like it a lot, and if you ask anyone that knows what I like about music, the gang vocals seen in "Do Nothing" make me really happy. The only bad part about this entire release that I could find was that the songs all seem to be similar, and the vocals don't have much deviation. As a fan of emo music, I recommend this release.

Hit Home/Buttons and Mindy Split

Hit Home/Buttons and Mindy Split
1. Super Nintendo Chalmers (B/M)
2. No One Beats Sub - Zero (B/M)
3. Trixie Tag (B/M)
4. Unsunset (H/H)
5. Burdener (H/H)

I'm a gigantic fan of Hit Home. (their release, "Happily Ever..."  was my top pick of 2013). They did this split a while ago with band Buttons and Mindy. Contrary to Hit Home's emotive twinkle, Buttons and Mindy  brings a indie pop twinkle to the table. Catchy lines and soft lyric heavy singing laces the songs but still is accompanied by the loving time signature changes/instrumental music of the twinkle genre.
In contrast to the lyric heavy songs from the first half of the split, Hit Home makes a shot at showing what they can do instrumentation wise, for the most part. The talent of these guys amazes me. Be in the guitar noodling riffs that break the song, the complicated drumming patterns,  or the deep driving bass, my attention is held through Hit Home's two songs. Both bands mix very well together, making this a wonderful release. Check it out.
