Farmhouse Sessions by Those Dirty Eyes

1. Delta Queen
2. My Baby
3. Old Alabama
4. Black Lung
5. Tree Swinger

Grab a beer and ruffle your beard, delta blues boys Those Dirty Eyes just released Farmhouse Sessions, which was in fact, recorded in a farmhouse. Listening to these five songs makes me think of the title sequence to some B-rate tv show about detectives in the swamplands. A two piece band, guitars are filled with slides, bends, and heavy distortion. Drums are heavy and hard-hitting, and vocals (Both members) are cathartic; not yelling but strained, raspy singing. Exactly the kind of vocals delta blues music should have.
There is a lo-fi aspect to the music, and that's okay because it fits the band perfectly. I don't think they would sound the same if they went and recorded in some high-quality studio. It's a quick release, and
just something to pop in and listen to, so check it out.

Fact, Fiction, and Everything In Between by Moonassi

//Fact, Fiction, and Everything In Between||Moonassi\\
1. Frail Bones
2. Head full of Miracles
3. The Number 2 doesn't look like you
4. Momento mori
5. Running from what you've done, and what you have not
6. get a fucking bed skirt dude
7. horses never bet on people and neither do I

Texas band (Texas is monopolizing on bands i think) Moonassi is a screamo/twinkle/emo band. I got the chance to play a house show with these guys a while back, and they were amazing, so I had to check out their recordings.

The seven track release, Fact, Fiction, and Everything In Between, is quick and to the point, production is well done for screamo/skramz music, and each song is short, making this a release you can listen to multiple times. Overall feeling is like most screamo bands, helpless, and vocals screech over heavy bass lines and what are simple twinkle guitar lines. As far as drumming goes, you've got some normal emo drumming, with chaotic blast beats thrown into the mix, to give the songs a great emo-violence feel. The release reminds me of Pg. 99, The Saddest Landscape, and Malon. Check it out, it's on their bandcamp as a pay as you will, and Moonassi is a relatively new band, so be on the lookout for new stuff in the near future.

Acoustic Demos, August 16th, 2014 by Grady Philip Drugg

//Acoustic Demos, August 16th, 2014||Grady Philip Drugg\\
1. Sleepwalking Child
2. Cliche
3. Sophia
4. Hydrocodone
5. Why I let My Hair Down

One of the local greats (originally from texas), Grady Drugg released this five track ep. Not one of those usually prosaic acoustic releases with a mono-tone voice and the same four chords used in every pop song, Grady sings with a silky voice over wonderful instrumentals, and the simple but well done lo-fi recordings give a soothing feel to the listeners. Harmonica sails through the last track, giving one of those Dylan feels that everyone knows too well. Lyrics of angst and life, disorders, truthful feelings, and much much more, move with the listener, and the way that the tracks meld together fits with the atmosphere entirely.
Essentially everything that's come out of Grady Drugg has been great. His last release, Untitled, is one of my favorite releases to listen to from a solo-artist. This is an artist that you're going to want to check out, so download this and put it in your ears.

Oh Just A Few Boys Horsin Around By Dirt Nap

1. Jvngle Boys
2. Drunk Snake
3. Tar Pit
4. Birds of Paradise
5. RDMT
6. Le Bushes
7. Kiss My Bones
8. Chocolate Covered Ants

THE River Punk cute fvck bois are back with a brand new 8 song release. Recorded on 4/20, released on 9/11, Dirt Nap is a band full of fun. Their first release, Jvst Ask the Boys, is one I still listen to on a regular basis so this second release coming out means a lot. Dirt Nap reminds me of some 1970's garage band (if I listened to 1970's garage band music). Surf rock but with that midwest lovin. As far as production go, this has to be classified as Lo-fi, but it's the professional kinda lo-fi, if you think that's an actual thing.  This release makes me want to get drunk and go to a basement show and do some weird handstands and skank and cut off my right hand and kiss a boy. (If you go to one of their shows you WILL end up kissing a boy).
Vocals are lethargic and fun, guitars are filled with wacky reverb and distortion, and the drums (Alex Harris) are fun to listen to and as chaotic as the rest of the release.

                                             "Uragggahhhhhhhhhhh ooooohhhhhhh"

Cool sp00ky riffs are filled throughout, and a western rock aspect is definitely seen throughout (Songs like "Chocolate Covered Ants")

Real picture of Dirt Nap coming back

Not sure if Dirt Nap is still a band, I for one thought they were gone for good, their guitarist/vocal man got a cool job at Nickelodeon in California doing something involving snakes and little boys. The release is put out through Rough Beast Records and Frenchkiss Label Group, and they've got 100 really cool tapes. (I overdrew my account buying one). Right now the release costs $420 to download but if you're lucky it will go up. Get it, so worth it. 10/10 would buy.

Dr.Karate|||Cannon Fodder Tour EP

Cannon Fodder Tour EP| Dr.Karate

Trackz:
1. Feelings (and how to destroy them)
2. Emperor
3. Where Is My Mind
4. Smokescreen
5. Tom's Slipknot Vinyl

Dr. Karate (Saint Louis, MO), released this five song EP a while ago. Three piece, Drums/Guitar/Guitar, with a cute little lo-fi sound to the entire thing. All three do vocals at one time or another throughout the release.
Lets get more funky with this sh*$#
Okay so the first song is good I actually like this a lot, with it's cool part changes and guitar things and wow okay cool. It's actually supposed to be kind of like the intro I guess and all but still I like it a lot more than some of the other songs. The Second song has like that spoken word vibe (Because it's actually spoken word vocals), which I'm not really into, but i'm fine with. What gets me on this song, is that it's so repetitive for the music. I'm guessing that vocals are supposed to be the main point of this song but you can only keep up with the vocals for so long. It's Charlie Chaplin's "The Great Dictator" speech. "Where Is My Mind" is a coolio cover. I just like this song a lot. Catchy chorus and cool vocals and stuff, I like this one. "Tom's Slipknot Vinyl" is a super sadboi song with some skramzy vocals from the drummer. Put this one on a mixed cd boys ;f
So overall instrumentation wise I feel like the guitar players are doing pretty good, with the lack of bass they don't have that filler in the background but that's never bothered me before. As far as drums go, they're simple overall, nothing interesting, but nothing that just make me cringe. The entire feel of the release has this really ambient-ish-esq-ness feel to it. Super sadboi release. Check it out, you'll probably find something you like from this.

New 417 band (ayy that's where I live), enJoyed is an experimental rock noise band, the kind that you get put in a trance listening to. First off, this is a lo-fi release. I'm thinking Shane (Vocals/guitar) recorded it with his phone. But even so, you can still dig what's going on here. Pretty sure enJoyed is a two piece, which I love, and I feel that they pull it off really well. Vocals are minimalistic, and when they do come in, they're just screeches and yelling in the background. Very lo-fi, very cool. Pretty much this entire release is noise, I don't know how else to put it. It's really ambient, the kind of stuff you put on and just listen to and take a nap and have a weird dream. I'm a big fan of this type of music, but i feel like if you don't enjoy experimental music, you probably won't love it. Cool thing about enJoyed, they seem to have no idea what they are doing at some points, but then they come together and it all sounds awesome. If you can get through the lo-fi, check it out.

12. The Exit
Newest release off of WayBridge Records, American Merlin is a far reaching lo-fi full length that is so full of genre's and different types of music it left me a little confused as to what was trying to be told by this album. The beginning track starts off with a great little piano instrumental song that sets the mood perfectly, creating some sick imagery. The first half of this release is really lo-fi and acoustic/alternative. Production gets gradually better as the songs progress, but seeing as how the last few songs are electronic ambient songs, they're going to be good production and stuff. Everything about this release is a gradual change into kind of like futuristic music, adding more and more electronic items and stuff, and as I listen to it more and more I realize just how good it all is. With a finishing touch to the release, "The Exit" tops everything off with a similar lo-fi piano outro to the beginning, helping solidify that this release is one that should definitely be checked out.

1.  Prehistoric Ovaries
2. Casual Astronaut
3. Woodson Blues
4. The Moon
5. Slim Pickin's
6. Untitled
7. No Suits to be worn here

Ya know what's nice? When you're just strolling through bandcamp and you accidentally find something amazing. Ya know what's better? When you're starting to find most music boring and repetitive with the same sounds, and you find something that isn't like that at all. Thrash-Funk Jam band from Kansas, Qualia just recently put out this 7 song instrumental release. Starts out really funky and gets really thrashy. Those bass lines. I mean I guess a funk band wouldn't work without a bassist that knows how to funk the funk up on bass but ya know it's cool to listen to. The recordings are a little lo-fi but in a way that suits the band 100%. Any more super nicely done and it wouldn't sound right. It's all really spacey and is totally something that you can just put on and do other things while this plays in the background, like read the latest installment of 17 magazine  or worship Satan. "Woodson Blues" opens with a gosh darn blues part and is like a BLUES song. Wowz. Maybe I just listen to too many emo and hardcore bands to appreciate some good jam bands but idgaf this is a sweet jam band. All the song lengths are relatively long, which is pretty cool (for once). Anywho could go on for hours about how so much music is boring and repetitive and stuff but I'm just happy I found a band that isn't so check these guys out.

Feed Into Your Mind by Bad Investments

Feed Into Your Mind by Bad Investments

Tracks:
Informalites
Swollen Pigments
Feed Into Your Mind
Trophy Wife
Side B

Loud, loud, loud, loud, loud, loud, loud, loud, loud, loud, loud. This band is loud. Bad Investments is a loud band from Columbia, MO that just got off of tour with Grammer, about a month a go (odd tour combo, but whatever). Feed Into Your Mind starts off violently and distorts the mind as the static and white noise convulse into wicked guitar riffs and shouty-vocals. It actually reminds me a lot of Mr.Bungles "Everybody I Went To Highschool With Is Dead" off of Disco Volante but 5 songs oppose to one.

Bass is very apparent in the mix, which is unusual, but cool. The riff towards the end of "Informalites" reminds me of The Sword, and the drum part towards the end of "Swollen Pigments" sounds like it would be awesome, but the clear-as-mud production of the track makes it where you can only hear the hit-hat, the ride and the snare drum (faintly).  Nothing about this release makes me think of The Chariot (that's a lie, the whole thing makes me think of The Chariot) especially the songwriting.

#BloodBrothers by Käptain Krünçh Cîdz

Grade: 6.0

1. Nightmare
2. Bloodshot Eyes and an Existential Crisis
3. It'z Krunch Time
4. Fall's End
5. Blood Brothers

Disclaimer: I am friends with the guys that made this album. In fact, they write for this blog. That bias exists but I want to make sure you all realize that I am attempting to be very objective as I review this.

This album drips of adolescence, and that's both a strength and a weakness. Its bio on Bandcamp is very short and admits of the band's inexperience. It says that it is the group's first release That's really quite evident. The general lack of direction is annoying at times because it is difficult to get inside the artists' heads, but its also intriguing- mysterious almost.

The songs are placed in a very logical order, but there is no continuity to the piece. The songs all flow well musically, but when it comes to the lyrical content of the songs, the listener is left confused. I'd almost say that it needs to be longer- that it needs a few filler songs that will better fuse the album together and give it some direction. Truly, there are a lot of shitty songs on a lot of great albums which both propel the lyrical narrative and give skin to the bones of the thematic skeleton established by the album's high points. With that being said, understand that this criticism is not that serious. It's very hard to give a 5 track album the strength of a full-length album. I wonder why Käptain Krünçh Cîdz didn't label this as an EP; that's really what it is.

There is a specific sound to each of the songs. I'd like to make note of the influences that I noticed throughout.

1. Nightmare- Queens of the Stone Age, The Clash, Soundgarden
2. Bloodshot Eyes and an Existential Crisis- Animal Collective
3. It'z Krunch Time- Modest Mouse
4. Fall's End- Green Day, My Chemical Romance, Rise Against, Joy Division
5. Blood Brothers- Animal Collective (Avey Tare)

Other influences that showed throughout: Metallica, Black Sabbath

The first track starts slowly and disjointedly, and then builds to erratic mayhem. When the vocals come in, things calm down a bit. Adrian Sprague's voice has a lot of character and he's capable of achieving many different ranges and styles. In this song the vocals remain calm and almost sadly apathetic. Think of the calloused melody of a grizzled punk vocalist's voice. It's a very strong start.

Then comes the second track, whose lengthy, pathological title perfectly labels the erratic rhythm of the song. It meanders a bit too long- as do all of the songs on the album. They aren't particularly long, but it seems to take them a while to get where they're going. However, whenever the vocals do come in, there's no build up to them. They began and then they stay the same for the entirety of the song. This is particularly true on the second track, but it's also true on the other tracks. Kasey's vocals on this track are very, very emotional. He squeals... Almost wheezes out the incomprehensible lyrics to the song. That seems like a negative description, but in this song I think it works very well. As stated previously, he reminds me a lot of Avey Tare in this track and the last track.

Track three is really where the album starts to fall apart. The first two songs are very solid and I like them a lot. They establish a very distinct style for the group. Track three is essentially an interlude. It's very short, it has no vocals, and it leads to track four fairly well. The problem with this song is that an EP does not need an interlude. An EP should not fuck around. It should get straight to the point and have less-than-perfect transitions. If an EP flowed from one song to the next flawlessly, the entire album would sound like one long, fucking song. Often times tracks with interludes sound like this on full-length albums, but the albums are long enough to support the illusion. I just see no need for such a short, pointless track on this album.

Track four really doesn't need an interlude. It's quite solid on it's own. If Käptain Krünçh Cîdz had a large collection of songs, I really think that this would be the quintessential one. It meanders a lot and really keeps you guessing. The vocals come on suddenly and don't abate until the end of the song. Adrian rasps and moans like the bastard child of Billie Joe Armstrong and Ian Curtis. It's really good. Most music critics believe that Joy division spawns the punk movement. The vocals in this track help prove this and meld the two styles in a very artful manner.

The final track attempts to slow things down a bit as the album comes to a close. It doesn't really do this well. It almost seems as if there was a lot that the listener missed out on. This album really feels like an LP. It has long instrumental portions and a senseless interlude. It's almost as if someone truncated a full-length album and released the first six songs.

Once again, the album is short and it is clearly difficult to develop the theme of a short album. With that being said, there is evidence of a lot of boredom, teen angst, and introspection in the lyrics of the piece. this strengthens my opinion that the whole album needs to be developed more fully.

Stray observations:
  • Punk musicians are pissy, and generally they relish in telling us all about it. The angst present in this piece seems rather unarticulated. The listener is left to wonder what the musicians are pissed about.
  • I heard very subtle (but deep-seated) 80's hard rock sounds. I may be judging this incorrectly, but I kind of feel like most people in a rock bands have been influenced by bands like Metallica and Black Sabbath. That's not exactly my cup of tea though, so it's hard for me to say with much confidence.
  • I know that it makes me pretentious, but I think that the hash-tag in the title is gimmicky.
  • They did name your own price on Bandcamp! That's badass!

Pinkly Smooth- Unfortunate Snort

Pinkly Smooth--Unfortunate Snort
"Sold my brother into Hell"
Trackz:
Necromance Theatre
Mezmer
Nosferatu Does A Hefty Dance
The Body Of Death Of The Man With The Body Of Death
Pixel & Nasal
McFly

Vampires, sacrificing babies, possession, black magic, murder. All of that is on this release. I'm actually just review this for nostalgic reasons (being this is from 2002 and the singer died in 2009), but I still find this a solid release. Self-proclaimed "Goblin Metal", Pinkly Smooth brings all the flavors of Thrash metal, funk, polka, and even some pop-influenced melody lines in the vocals, into a schizophrenic mess that doesn't ever get boring. Besides that snare tone in the first minute of the opening track, this release is golden (Seriously, that snare drum sounded like someone was just punching a balloon on beat.). In Necromance Theatre it starts of with a kind of Pantera-influenced riff that just evolves in some crazy inverted-funk/ska pattern for the verse. I've still yet to hear anything like it, and it's kind of disappointing. Mezmer starts off with a gnarly guitar solo in 6/8 the songs energy doesn't ever go away, even when everything but the piano drops out. Pixel & Nasal is basically Jaws if the shark became best friends with cowboys and were on a shit load of acid and copious other amounts of drugs. McFly could've EASILY been a radio hit, it's so catchy, but it won't because there's no market for this band and there never was.

All the instruments on this EP are top of their class, like damn, there's sweet guitar action everywhere, drums do a funny thing were they keep me entertained. The BASSIST actually knows how to play something other than what the guitarist is playing, the pianist/vocalist: DO YOU HEAR WHAT'S GOING ON THERE? DO YOU?
I highly encourage taking the time to find all the tracks here on the internet. 10/10

My City (Is) My Defeat by (Come With Me) If You Want To Live

My City (is) My Defeat | (Come With Me) If You Want To Live
1. My City (My Defeat)
2. These Letters (That I swear I will never send)
3. A Six Year Old Girl (Says goodbye to her dad at work)
4. You Were The Bullet (Lodged in my Brain)
5. This Is It (This Is The Last Words I will Sing)

Lo-Fi release I found on Bandcamp, (Come With Me) If You want to live)  is a female fronted emo skramz band. Guitars are loud and dance around the tracks, only out mixed by the vocals, which are raw, hard, and screeching. Vocals are for the most part scramz stock, save for this weird nasal singing that kicks in in a few of the songs. At first these vocals are really annoying, but after a while they really compliment the tracks. Being a lo-fi release, you can't really hear the drums at all. They're really far back in the mix; same with bass.
I was a little iffy about this release, because it's overall really weird, but there are times when the band takes a step back from the chaotic feel in most of there songs, and lay down a couple of seconds of music that really catches your attention.

Found another band from Glasgow, this one is an experimental/ambient band. Sucks that I'm finding these bands that I like but I mean:
To see these bands live would be kinda ridiculous. Anyway, as I said, Herbert Powell is an experimental/ambient/lo-fi band. I for one can really get into this, and I'm sure people who are fans of the genre's could easily get into it. Vocals are far withdrawn, and tracks are instrumentation heavy. Guitars dance around the track, drums are simple complimentary drums, and bass is driving. I think keys are scattered throughout the release but with this kind of music ya never really know. This is the kind of music I'll put on in the background and listen to while I'm doing something important like sleeping. The tracks tend to drag, but in a good way, and even though many times the instrumentation seems to be randomly placed with no direction, it all comes together at times, resulting in an awesome affect of making really cool music. Very cool thing where the entire song kind of falls apart in "My Glass Teeth". I really dig the guitar riffs and the vocals on this release. Check this band out if you are a fan of the genre.

Demo 2012 | Pizza Breath
1. Intro/Dropout
2. Untitled
3. Anti-social/Apathy

Local  skate punk/hardcore band Pizza Breath's 2012 Demo is a Pizza Breath that you won't be finding at their local shows. The lineup from 2012 is way different, as well as their sound, but I think it's fun to go back and look at this release, so here we go. First off: Mixing wise, what the hell happened there. This is such a quiet release it's almost funny. Joe's vocals dominate the entire band. I mean, he's a really loud singer normally, but still, like damn. Anyway, if you can get past all of that, you've still got some awesome music. This release is really grungy and totally hardcore-punk. It's at a low tempo throughout, and what you can hear of the instruments is stock for the most part. I for one love Pizza Breath. My bands play with them a lot and they are all really awesome guys.

Father Figures Split by Marcy

Father Figures Split | Marcy
Single Track Release

Milwaukee skramz/punk band Marcy's release, Father Figures Split is a seven and a half minute non-stop release filled with heavy hitting instrumentation and high screeching vocals. Contradicting to the release title, I don't believe this is a split. As I said it's only one song, and it all flows pretty seamlessly. Plus it sounds like the same band throughout. The songs flow as if you were watching a band play through their set list as fast as they can, and even though it's a really lo-fi release, what you can hear from the guitars is something that's fun to listen to. For sure a skramz band. Check it out.

New Madrid is a shoegaze/rockabilly/surf-esq band from Springfield Missouri. New Madrid's releases are all lo-fi, and yet still easy to listen to. Run times on all the songs are long, Danger Room Demos clocking in at around 30 minutes. Vocals are far back in the mix, and what I can make out of them remind me of a lower end Dirt Nap vocal style. Instrumentation is loud, and bass is heavy, which I really enjoyed sitting back and listening to. There are some neat guitar riffs in here, and on a whole the release is really chill. The only downside is that it is a very long release to listen to, and the songs are a bit repetitive. However, each song is different so it's not like they all sound the same. So check it out.

Check it. This ep/demo is for all you drama queens that can't get over the sad summers you've had in high school. Songs about wishing the girl(Lauren)/guy(Tony) would've picked you over the jerk they did pick. All delivered in a fast, lo-fi, pop-punk, synth-pop sound. Fun for the sad, and sad for fun. Woodgraves' sophmore release steps away from the full-acoustic release that was seen in Leave Me In The Dirt. Songs 2012-2013 is a twinkle/emo release, one that reminds me of Malon. Once again a lo-fi recording, this release has long and hard hitting cymbal rides, mid range yell vocals, deep driving bass, and a light guitar feel. Noodling is used throughout for the guitar, and Ryan's voice stands out well on the mix.

I was going through tumblr, re-blogging some sad posts and looking for sad music on bandcamp when I found Still Bummed by Nouns under the "Sad" music tag. This lo-fi emo/electronic/indie rock noise punk release was perfect for a sad snowed in day. Nouns is a band from Little Rock, Arkansas, and Still Bummed was recorded in a bedroom, and has a great lo-fi vibe to it. Each song flows into one another wonderfully, making it easy to get lost in the 10 songs as they slowly meld together. Vocals are spacey and held back, and the lyrics are for the most part easy to relate to. If you've ever seen a shoegaze band live, you'll get the same kind of feeling listening to Nouns. Instrumentation is wide and very sad, guitar driven, almost punk at times, give it a listen and download it for 50 cents when you get the chance because it's worth it.
